Rhizome
The word ‘rhizome’ is an originally biological term that indicates a horizontal stem of plant, and since it was used in the book by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, it has become widespread as a philosophical concept. Non-dualist and non-hierarchical, ‘rhizome’ means a mode of knowledge production that allows for multiplicity and connectivity. Rhizome is also a name of a website whose office is located in the New Museum in New York. The Rhizome site deals with art based on new media, digital platforms and the Internet. Starting as a mailing list of artists working online in 1996, it has grown into an art magazine that carries out in-depth discussion, and also a digital archive that accumulates related historical resources. Furthermore, it organizes exhibitions and art events on- and off-line and commisions artists in the field of media art .
